In the past sugar was known as “white gold,” because it was a rare and expensive commodity. Sugar is a popular ingredient in skin care products today because it:

• acts as a natural exfoliator
• does not clog pores
• helps eliminate blemishes
• restores balance to skin’s oils

Sugar contains glycolic acid, an alpha-hydroxy acid that is crucial for maintaining healthy skin.  The natural glycolic acid in sugar not only helps condition and moisturize skin, but protect it from toxins.

To make our Whipped Sugar Scrubs, we use pure cane sugar (raw sugar) that is made from clarified cane juice boiled down to a crystalline solid. We do not use the less expensive white sugar, because bone char is used to make it white in color and it is not vegan.

When you regularly exfoliate your skin with a sugar scrub, it becomes healthier in appearance and function.  After dead skin has been exfoliated, your body’s largest organ works more efficiently to expel toxins and take in nourishment.  Skin becomes more uniform in appearance, is softer to touch, and has a radiant glow.  Sugar scrubs are also gentler, less dehydrating than salt scrubs and be used by all skin types.

cruelty free and vegan

When we created our product line in 2007, we made a conscious decision to not use any animal-derived ingredients in our formulas.  We wanted our products to be effective, luxurious, and cruelty-free.  All of our products are 100% Vegan-friendly and contain no animal ingredients or animal-derived ingredients.

Being animal-free means NEVER using:

  • beeswax (often found in lip balms and mascaras)
  • milk (found in soaps)
  • collagen (skin strengthener derived from cows)
  • carmine (a colorant from beetle shells)
  • bone char (used in processing sugar to make it white)

Instead, we use these cruelty-free ingredients:

  • candelilla wax (made from plants) in our Cocoa/Lime Hemp Lip Balms
  • natural organic coconut oil and other non-animal-derived oils for moisturizing
  • iron oxides, chromium oxides, and ultramarines for colorant in our Whipped Sugar Scrubs
  • natural unrefined cane sugar in our Whipped Sugar Scrubs

Bergamot/Ylang Ylang Whipped Sugar Scrub

Using a sugar scrub can help clean skin’s surface and unclog pores, which helps with cell turnover.  By using a sugar scrub weekly, you will see a huge difference in the way your skin looks and feels.

How is Our Sugar Scrub Different from Other Sugar Scrubs?
Our Whipped Sugar Scrubs are 100% natural and you can them no matter if you have oily, dry, combination or mature skin.  We use pure unrefined cane sugar (which does not contain bone char) and add natural exfoliants like blueberry seeds, ground vanilla beans, rose hip seeds, and ground apricot seeds. Hothouse Botanicals’ Whipped Sugar Scrubs also contain ingredients to help hydrate skin such as organic coconut oil, organic extra virgin olive oil, organic shea butter, and natural Vitamin E.

Using a Sugar Scrub:
After cleansing skin, use a sugar scrub to exfoliate and condition the body.  Apply a handful of sugar scrub to wet skin and massage in circular motion over the entire body.  After rinsing off your sugar scrub, all of the dead skin cells will be removed and your skin will feel refreshed and healthy.  Be careful when leaving your tub or shower, since the moisturizing ingredients are slippery.

Instant Manicure:

Don’t have time for a manicure?  Take a few tablespoons of sugar scrub and massage it on your hands and nails in a circular motion for about a minute.  Rinse your hands and lightly towel dry.  Your skin will look radiantly healthy and your nails will be gently polished!

Vanilla/Lime products

Happy Earth Day! We love that we are a green company and we try to use as little packaging as possible, so there is less to throw away. Our packing peanuts are made from cornstarch, which dissolve in water. Sustainable U.S. grown soy wax is incorporated into our soy candles. We use recyclable packaging on all of our bath and body products and use recycled containers for our soy candles. In the near future, we plan on changing all of our PET recyclable containers to post-consumer recycled PET containers.

In honor of Earth Day, save 20% on all Fizzy Foaming Baths, Soy Candles, and Whipped Sugar Scrubs. No coupon code is needed. (Sale ends 4/24 at midnight.)

Last week I made a large product donation to My Sister’s Place, a 30-day domestic violence shelter for women in Chandler.  Our donation included an assortment of Aromatherapy Bath Salts, Whipped Sugar Scrubs, and Fizzy Foaming Baths.

My Sisters’ Place focuses on the needs and education of the women, but also has a great deal of programming for their children, offering art therapy and trust-building activities. The staff of the shelter works with women on legal, safety and personal issues during their stay.  They provide domestic violence education groups and have a case manager assigned to each family.  After the stay at My Sisters’ Place, women have the option of applying to Pathways, a transitional housing program.  Currently Pathways has only one house and two apartments, which limits the number of families it can support.

According to the Arizona Governor’s office, law enforcement officers respond to a domestic violence call every five minutes in Arizona.  To raise awareness there is a Walk to End Domestic Violence every April in downtown Phoenix.  The annual walk helps to cover basic costs for many shelters throughout Arizona.
